This typographical poster was designed to promote the 1922 motion picture Nosferatu. There were elements within the film, which required representation through the poster. The first of which was the notion of death and fear, represented by the harsh contrast between the black and red, the red also being symbolic of blood. Another main element in the film is the sense of ambiguity, the blurring of boundaries across death and life, sexuality and between the believable and the make-believe. This is represented in the poster through the use of unsteady outlines in the letters, which would otherwise form strong characters. This then deteriorates the legibility of the letters making the words slightly harder to read, thus portraying the element of uncertainty and ambiguity.
